Cape Town - With the 2016 local government elections upon us, it is perhaps fitting to look at the number of vehicles government spent tax payers' hard-earned Rands on so far this year.
With information supplied by Naamsa (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa), we look at passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCV) purchased by government from January and June 2016.
Though the organisation lists the overall vehicles purchased by automaker, it did not provide model details.
Naamsa says that the recorded sales are "confined to sales made against an official Government purchase order, and to vehicles which will bear a Government, Provincial or other special number."
The figures
A total of 5775 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles were purchased by the South African government from January to June 2016. Of these, 3369 of these were LCVs and 2 406 passenger cars.
During the first six months of 2016, Nissan found favour with government selling a total of 1495 LCVs to government followed by Ford (753). Toyota (540) and Isuzu (380) were the only other manufacturers to sell more than 100 LCVs.
