Cape Town - Toyota’s new Hilux has once again topped the sales charts as South Africa's best-selling bakkie.
A market-leading tally of 3185 Hilux units helped Toyota retain its No.1 status with an overall sales volume just shy of 10 000 units (9642) for the fifth consecutive month. In May 2016, Toyota reports a market share of 22.5%.
Following the Hilux in terms of sales, is the Ford Ranger and Isuzu KB with 2797 and 1029 unit sales respectively.
Toyota going strong
Calvyn Hamman, senior vice-president of Toyota South Africa Motors sales and marketing, says: “Taking a closer look at the Hilux numbers reveals that 90% of the sales, which equates to 3200 units, is via the dealer channel; once again reinforcing just how popular this vehicle is with private buyers.

Other stand-out performers from the Toyota stable include the Fortuner (1333 sales), the ubiquitous Quantum (1325) and the iconic Land Cruiser 79 pick-up, which racked up a class-leading 316 sales.
LCV market declines
WesBank said: "New vehicle sales through the dealer channel remained relatively robust, ending May at 2.5% down on the same period in 2015. This was largely as a result of pent-up demand for new arrivals in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment. LCV sales through the dealer channel grew 15.4%, year-on-year."
