Best-selling SUVs in SA: Toyota Land Cruiser, Volvo XC60 run riot

The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 has been a stellar performer for the Japanese automaker in 2018, consistently earning strong sales figures as a leading SUV.

In December 2018 the big, brawny SUV topped the list with 143 units.

It comprehensively outsold its two big "rivals" - its stablemate, the Toyota Prado, and the Range Rover/RR Sport with the latter securing second place in the last month of 2018 with 106 units sold. The Prado managed to sell the same number of units.

Disco proves popular

The Land Rover Discovery continued its strong run and found favour with 46 new owners, followed by the Range Rover Velar (39 units) in fifth place. Volvo’s XC90 registered a sales figure 38 units, while the new Volkswagen Touareg sold 31 units.

Audi’s Q7 found favour amongst 27 new owners, and the Jaguar F-Pace slipped a bit on 24 units to slot into ninth place. The bulky Lexus LX rounds out the top ten with 17 units sold.

XC60 makes triple digits

The highly acclaimed Volvo XC60 went top of the log for medium-sized luxury SUVs in December 2018. The Swedish beauty was the only SUV in this list to surpass the 100-mark with 109 units sold. Audi’s Q5 just missed out on 94 units.

The Range Rover Evoque, set to be replaced by a newer model in the very near future, moved to third place with 73 units, followed by its cousin, the Land Rover Discovery Sport, on 62 units. In fifth place is the Volvo XC40 on 54 units.

Jaguar’s E-Pace sold off 49 units, followed very closely by the Audi Q3 on 48 units. In eighth place is the Lexus NX on 22 units and in ninth the Lexus RX with nine units sold.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio sold a solitary unit to grab tenth place.
