SEE: Bugatti Divo, SSC Tuatara... some of the coolest cars at the Monterey car week

The Monterey car week is an amazing showcase of rare, classic and modern vehicles.

While the prestigious cars of yesteryear was the main attraction, there are plenty of modern examples for car enthusiasts to feast their eyes on.

Timeless classics

A rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO SI Coupe sold for an eye-watering $48 405 000 (R685-million), becoming the most expensive purchase in the process.

The event was also an opportunity for manufacturers to debut their newest models - most notably Mercedes-Benz with the EQ Silver Arrow and Lamborghini with a special edition Aventador SVJ as well as a unique Lambo lounge.

2. SSC Tuatara

We all know Hennessey with their Venom F5 are gunning for the record breaking 300mph mark in the not too distant. However, they have a direct rival that doesn’t come from one of the big name manufacturers, but instead another custom American supercar builder: SSC (formerly Shelby Supercars) has brought a preproduction hypercar called the Tuatara to the playing field. With over 1750hp from an engine not so different to the Texans twin turbo V8, it may be this that breaks the record!
