Mitsubishi rocks ASX ante

HARTEBEESPOORT, South Africa – Mitsubishi South Africa has expanded its ASX sports ute range with a Rockford Fosgate sound system and upgraded specifications.

Mitsubishi has been working very hard on its A-game to add credibility to their rep in the industry since sales slumped for the automaker in 2009. The numbers back then were a low 359 000 but its global figures are back up to about 550 000.

According to the automaker, crossovers and SUVs have grown from a 1% share of the market since 2006 to 10% in 2013. And, when you stop and take a look at all the offerings available, it’s pretty obvious that the number of new models has grown substantially.

The ASX – Active Smart Crossover - goes up against Renault’s new Duster, Nissan’s Qashqai and even Citroen’s C4 AirCross – with the AirCross being the most pleasant on the eye, in my books.

The range now includes a GLS manual derivative, taking the line-up to five models. All units house a 2.0-litre petrol engine starting with the entry-level GL, then GLX and GLS all in manual guise and two GLS CVT (auto) models.

The cars now come packed with features but with so much competition floating about, pricing is key. Sadly for Mitsubishi, one can get a few more affordable options and that’s quite a pity as it’s not a bad-looking car at all. But perhaps buyers will see its value for money with all its included goodies and settle for its power figures.

READY TO RIVAL

The car is good for 110kW/197Nm at 4 200rpm. It’s neat, comfy, and spacious. Take it out on some gravel roads and the ASX has fierce confidence.

The ASX only arrived here in SA in 2011, after it was unveiled at the 2010 Geneva auto show. Aesthetics and power figures are still the same, since the car was re-launched and upgraded early in January 2013.

Standard safety features include Mitsubishi’s Rise body construction, five-star Euto NCAP ratings, seven airbags, anti-lock brakes, brake assist system and electronic brake-pressure distribution.

Other driver assistance systems are added as one steps up the ladder. It includes active stability control, electronic traction control, wide front headlights with cornering function and hill start assistance – all depending on the derivative.

Convenience niceties include Bluetooth voice activation, power mirrors and windows, multi-function steering wheel and dusk-sensing headlights.

Mitsubishi also said the models with the Rockford Fosgate sound systems would really rock the music lovers as the front door panels have been transformed to a  into boom boxes with materials used to reduce any rattling or distortion in the sound. I cranked up the volume a bit to see that this wasn't just all talk. The sound quality is crisp and clear and almost drowned out my driving partner's ramblings.

The base model GL gets auto lights control, rain-sensing wipers and cruise control.

The GLX gets a multimedia touchscreen, rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, a full glass roof, auto aircon, leather and heatable seats, indicators in the side mirrors and 17” alloy rims.

The new derivative GLS manual comes with the same driver assistance systems as mentioned above and a Rockford Fosgate sound with nine speakers. These are also added to the range-topping GLS CVT models along with keyless operating system.

The cars come with a three-year or 100 000km warranty and a five-year or90 000km service plan.
