Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche... here's how many German cars were sold in SA so far this year

From Volkswagen's budget Polos to Audi's premium A3, we look at top-performing German automakers in South Africa during the first half of 2019.

Some of the manufacturers in our below list produce light commercial vehicles (LCVs), as well trucks and buses, but our list will only focus on the passenger vehicles for fairness among the contenders.

Volkswagen was the top-selling German automaker in South Africa with a solid 33 761 new passenger vehicles sold from January to June, according to Naamsa. Mercedes-Benz was second with 9662 units, followed by BMW which sold 7774.

Audi performed well to garner 4076 signatures during the past few months, while Opel managed 1104 units. Porsche, understandably, is last with 707 luxury models sold.

Not all manufacturers release individual sale figures (namely Mercedes-Benz and Porsche), but we can report on the rest.

For Volkswagen, the Polo Vivo dominated local sales overall with 15 050 units, followed by the Polo (10 177) and Tiguan (2790).

BMW's premium 3 Series sold an impressive 1666 units, followed by two SUVs - the X3 (1011) and the X5 (715).

The Audi A3 remains as popular as ever and raked in 1519 sales over the first half of the year, followed by the Q5 and A4; selling 846 and 609 respectively.

For Opel it was the Corsa (384 units) who sold the most, ahead of the Crossland X (308 units) and Grandland X (126 units).
