SEE: How the SA Bobsled team from Benoni won this year's edition of the Red Bull box cart race

After an eight-year hiatus, an eventful, action-packed day saw team SA Bobsled from Benoni electrify the 25 000-strong crowd and the esteemed judging panel to win the Red Bull Box Cart Race 2018 in spectacular fashion.

They impressed with their booty-shaking dance routine and a near flawless plunge down Joburg’s Sandton Drive to be awarded the title and the winner’s trophy on Sunday ( Sept 16).

'We're used to this'

The winning team comprising of Stuart Turner, John Turner, Lloyd Herbst and Gareth Turner: "It was mostly a blur. There were some really big bumps which were exciting. The chicane was tricky too, trying to get a good racing line through there was touch. The back start sliding out, but you know, we're used to this"

"We normally race on ice so there was a lot more grip out there than we are used to," said a still breathless Turner after stepping off the podium.

Red Bull Box Cart Race isn’t just about who blasts down in the fastest time, but the teams must also entertain the spectators and impress the judges with a slick dance routine.

Epic times and crashes

Designed by none other than SA off-road racer and Dakar winner, Giniel de Villiers, the 500m snaking course was a challenging one with all the requisite banked corners and jumps to challenge even the sturdiest of carts.

The biggest crash of the day had to go to Durban-based, Rich Kids of Mzansi whose epic antics saw them do a flying face plant right on the final kicker of the track.

High fives abounded as the winners were joined by team Bathtime in second place with Ballberions Dragon rounding out the podium. The setting highveld sun brought the curtain down on a memorable day’s entertainment courtesy of 70 teams whose crazy, creative imaginations and antics made for an immensely entertaining afternoon.

"It was a really fun experience judging today, I’ve never seen Sandton Drive like this. There was such a great vibe here today!" said Kagiso 'KG' Rabada, who was one of the judges on the day.
