CAPE TOWN - The US Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the new Subaru Legacy and Outback as winners of its 2014 Top Safety Pick+ awards.
The new Outback has been confirmed for South Africa in 2015, while the new Legacy is still under consideration for local introduction.
The redesigned Subaru Legacy achieved the highest possible rating of 'good' in the institute’s "crashworthiness evaluations of front small overlap, front moderate overlap, side impact, roof crush and rear impact".

Subaru reports it holds more 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick awards than any other automaker. Seven Subaru models, including its BRZ, WRX/STI and XV, have earned 2014 safety awards from the IIHS – four with Top Safety Pick and three with Top Safety Pick+ including the Forester, Legacy and Outback.
Subaru Southern Africa marketing manager Ashley Lazarus said: “While timing cannot yet be confirmed, the 2015 Subaru Outback will see South African roads in the future.
"The stellar safety performances of both the all-new Outback and Legacy once again go to prove the unwavering dedication to safety enforced by Subaru engineers, who integrate leading safety features like Subaru’s ring-shaped reinforcement body structure to ensure all Subaru vehicles are as safe as can be.”
