Scooby cuts BRZ tag: what's the catch?

  • Equivalent of R44 000 price cut May 1
  • BRZ SE Lux now costs equivalent of R425 911
  • Clear differentiation from new WRX STI price
  • Subaru UK passing benefits to clients

LONDON, England – The Subaru BRZ is now more affordable in the UK thanks to a price cut to the equivalent of R44 375 in the UK on its on-the-road price.

Subaru UK says from May 1 the BRZ range will start at the equivalent of R425 911 for the SE Lux model with manual transmission and R452 536 for auto.

BETTER CURRENCY

Subaru UK’s MD Paul Tunnicliffe said the price change was the result of an improved currency exchange. Don't hold thumbs for that in SA, either... and anyway Subaru SA says there has been no word coming through from the head honchos about price restructuring.

Pity, considering the entry level BRZ costs R399 900 here in SA, on par with UK prices. Perhaps SA car prices are not that pricey after all?

Tunnicliffe said: "A more favourable pound/yen exchange rate has allowed us to reduce the price of a number of models in recent years. Our performance range – the BRZ and WRX STI – are the latest to benefit. Together they are outstanding value for enthusiastic drivers seeking a high level of performance, driver interaction and entertainment on the road."

In the last 12 months Subaru UK has also reduced the price of the all-wheel drive XV compact crossover range.

The BRZ is powered by a  two-litre boxer petrol engine and rear-wheel drive for engaging driving, says the automaker.

The WRX STI will arrive in the UK during May, priced from the equivalent of R514 660, making it R71 000 less than the previous model.

The well-specced BRZ SE Lux comes with Alcantara and leather seats and a Torsen rear-axle differential while auto models have steering wheel-mounted gear shift paddles.
