  • New BMW MPV - 2 Series Active Tourer
  • Space for five, 1510 litres capacity
  • Front-wheel-drive, three cylinder engines

The new 2 Series Active Tourer sees BMW introduce front-wheel-drive and three cylinder engines for the first time in its model line-up.

Following its SA-launched 2 Series Coupe, the second member of the new 2 Series range, BMW says, “combines dynamism, style, elegance and practicality in one cleverly packaged car”.

“New lightweight turbocharged engines with three and four cylinders, a comprehensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics measures and the extensive connectivity provided by BMW ConnectedDrive are all elements in a driving experience that allows sporty performance and incredible efficiency.”

THREE-CYLINDER, FWD BMW

The new 2 Series Active Tourer will be launched in South Africa in the first quarter of 2015. It will be offered with two petrol (218i and 220i) and one diesel derivative (220d). Prices run from R378 000 to R422 000.

The new three-cylinder petrol 218i unit - with a 1.5-litre displacement – mated to a six-speed manual gearbox is capable of 100kW/220Nm, a combined fuel consumption of 4.9 litres/100km and 115g/km CO2 emissions.

For the first time BMW has introduced front-wheel-drive: “The result is a new front-wheel-drive system on the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer that balances comfort and agility – key requirements of customers in the segment rarely met by other vehicles.”

The new MPV is 4.3m long, 1.8m wide and 1.5m tall with a wheelbase of 2.6m.

In comparison to its BMW siblings:
About two cm longer than the 1 Series
About one cm taller than the X1
Seating position two cm higher than that of the X1 and 11cm taller than the 1 Series

VERSATILE MPV

Its luggage compartment can be enlarged from 468 to 1510 litres. Flexibility is further enhanced by a sliding rear seat and the luggage compartment can be accessed through a large, wide-opening, tail hatch which also features push button auto opening/closing or the Smart-Opener function where the flick of the foot sets it in motion.

It has a ‘foldable’ boot floor that conceals a storage compartment with a handy multifunction tray. Lashing points and bag hooks, one on either side of the rear compartment, add to its practicality.

STANDARD KIT

The 2 Series Active Tourer will make its RHD debut in the UK in September 2014 in four specification levels –SE, Sport, Luxury and M Sport. According to BMW: “The Sport model places the emphasis on the dynamic side, while the Luxury model is all about elegance and exclusivity."

Standard kit includes auto tailgate, dual-zone auto aircon, rear park distance control, BMW Emergency Call, 40:20:40 split folding rear seat (with power folding functionality) and 60:40 sliding rear bench, Bluetooth with USB interface and audio streaming, 16.5cm monitor, keyless engine start.

Other standard features include performance control with multiple modes (Eco pro, comfort and sport), rain sensor with auto headlights, and multi-function leather steering wheel.

Sport models have 17” sport alloy rims, sport front seats, LEDs, black trim and assertive exterior styling. Luxury variants build on this with the addition of 17” Luxury alloys, leather upholstery, LED ambient lighting, chromed exterior and wood trim.

M-SPORT KIT?

The 2 Series Active Tourer can specified with M Sport elements that include M Aerodynamics, M Sport suspension, 18” M light-alloys, M leather steering-wheel and sports seats.

The use of high-tensile and ultra high-tensile multi-phase steels make the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer “stiffer, safer and lighter".

As part of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies,  the new model has stop/start, brake energy regeneration, gearshift Indicator and aero curtain, which uses two vertical air inlets in the front bumper to direct the airstream along the front wheels.

BMW CONNECTED DRIVE

For the first time in its segment, BMW will offer a colour head-up display (optional as part of the Media package – Professional Plus).

The MPV is equipped with the automaker’s Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function - if the system detects a person or a stationary vehicle ahead it emits audible and visible warnings and primes the brakes. If the driver fails to react, the system will brake for him.

It also has BMW’s new parking assistant - at less than 35km/h the system will alert the driver when it detects appropriate parallel parking using ultrasound sensors. Using the electromechanical steering system, the assistant takes charge of steering, leaving the driver to “focus on acceleration, braking and gears”.

SEVEN-SEAT VARIANT

If you thought BMW was done with its front-wheel drive models, think again. Following its SA-bound 2 Series Active Tourer will be yet another family-orientated model, using the same platform but offering more space.

Spy photographers spotted a seven-seat variant of the 2 Series Active Tourer. The new model is likely to be called the 2 Series Family Tourer.
