The second generation of BMW’s ActiveHybrid 7 had its premier in 2012 and the updated model presents even lower fuel consumption and emissions figures – it is now available in SA.
The revised ActiveHybrid 7 is powered by BMW’s 235kW TwinTurbo six-cylinder inline engine (to replace the eight-cylinder previously used) linked to a 40kW electric motor.
V8 NO MORE
The hybrid system, with a combined system output of 260kW/500Nm, is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new BMW ActiveHybrid 7, according to BMW, accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. Its average fuel consumption of 6.8 litres/100 kilometres, the automaker added, represents a 14% fuel saving over the equivalent 740i with a conventional drive system. A CO2 emissions figure of 158g/km is quoted for the ActiveHybrid 7.
The ActiveHybrid 7 is also said to be an improvement over the standard range since it used a number of additional innovative functions. The electric motor, for example, generates an extra 210Nm of torque to boost the petrol six-cylinder.
Brake Energy Regeneration, a hybrid start-stop function, and a fuel-saving Eco Pro mode with coasting function and proactive analysis – to prepare the car’s drive system for upcoming situations on the road – are also available.
The new ActiveHybrid 7 can also run purely on electric power – at speeds up to 60km/h for around four kilometres.
The hybrid Seven is also produced at BMW’s Plant Dingolfing alongside the 5, 6 and 7 Series.
ActiveHybrid 7 prices:
Standard - R1 034 500
Innovations - R1 076 600
