BMW ActiveHybrid 3

The introduction to BMW’s ActiveHybrid programme of the 3 Series model combines the automaker’s award-winning six-cylinder with an electric drive system.

In the ActiveHybrid 3, BMW's 225kW TwinPower inline six-cylinder is coupled with a 40kW electric motor, powered by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, to generate a combined power of 250kW, which is channeled to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The lithium-ion battery pack is stored beneath the luggage area.

ECO PRO MODE

Charging of the battery mostly takes place during coasting or under braking and, while coasting at speeds up to 160km/h in Eco Pro mode, the petrol engine can be switched off or fully decoupled for even better efficiency.

To avoid periods with the engine running at idle at traffic lights or in peak traffic periods, the ActiveHybrid 3’s hybrid start-stop function kicks in in these conditions. The car’s electronics can also be linked up with the Professional navigation system to allow for real-time analysis of the driving situation.

The car can be driven on electric power only at speeds up to 75km/h for around four kilometres.

The ActiveHybrid 3 sprints from 0 – 100km/h in 5.3 seconds and returns a fuel consumption figure of 5.9 litres/100km while emitting 139g of CO2 emissions.

As for its appearance, the ActiveHybrid 3 builds on the 3 Series Sedan design with details in keeping with its hybrid drive technology.  “ActiveHybrid 3” lettering is shown on the C-pillars and door sill strips, and matt chrome exhaust tailpipes are among the distinguishing features.

Eighteen-inch Streamline light-alloy wheels, a range of driver assistance and BMW ConnectedDrive services are available as options.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 3 is produced at BMW’s Munich plant.
