Ferrari on pole in Germany

2012-07-21 15:28

GP HAT-TRICK ON THE CARDS: Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has every chance to become the first driver to win three races in 2012 as he takes pole position ahead of the German Grand Prix.

HOCKENHEIM, Germany - Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso took pole position at a rain-soaked Hockenheim circuit ahead of the German Grand Prix.

With rain falling throughout qualifying the circuit pushed driver skill and team strategy to the limit. Alonso, the current 2012 Formula 1 championship leader, was quickest during qualifying with a time of 1min40.621.

The Ferrari ace proved to be better in the wet as he edged out rivals during the final practice session for the German Grand Prix.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were second and third fastest, ahead of Mercedes’ Michael Schumacher and Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg.

Webber, winner in Silverstone, will have to pull out all the stops after being penalised for a gearbox technicality at the British Grand Prix. He will start eighth after incurring a five-place penalty for an unscheduled gearbox change.
