ROSBERG QUICKEST IN PRATICE TWO: Teams took full advantage of a drying Silverstone circuit with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg claiming the fastest time during the second practice session.Image: AFP

Nico Rosberg was fastest for Mercedes during the second practice session for the British Formula 1 Grand Prix, after rain made a mockery of the morning session.

Rosberg, winner on the winding streets of Monaco in 2013, lapped the Silverstone circuit on a largely dry afternoon with a best time of 1min 32.248.

Mark Webber and Red Bull team mate and championship leader Sebastian Vettel were second and third on the timesheets.
Force India's Paul Di Resta was fourth with Rosberg's team mate Lewis Hamilton in fifth.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa skidded off and smashed into the tyre wall at Stowe after seven laps.

Rain played havoc with opening practice at the 2013 British Formula 1 with only half of the grid posting a timed lap and most of the leading drivers remaining in their garages.

Daniel Ricciardo, eager to show Red Bull bosses what he can do now that there is a declared vacancy at the champions with Mark Webber departing in 2014, was top of the timesheets for Toro Rosso after completing 10 laps.

His best time of 1mim54.249 may have been so slow as to be meaningless but at least he gave the long-suffering fans something to watch on a morning short of track action.

Red Bull, Lotus and McLaren drivers did no more than installation laps. Lotus's Kimi Raikkonen did not bother even with that.
