A much upgraded version of the imported Mondeo Ghia already on South African roads, the ST220 has a 3-litre 24-valve Duratec V6 engine which pushes out a scintillating 166 kW - on a par with competitors from BMW, Mercedes and Audi - to give a top speed of 245 km/h, with zero to 100 km/h acceleration in just 7.9 seconds.

In addition to the engine changes, the hot four-door Ford gets wide takkies on wide 18 inch 16-spoke alloy wheels, performance tuned sports suspension, aerodynamic front and rear bumpers, flared front wheel arches and a rear spoiler, a sports front grille with integrated front fog lights and silver-finish trim rings and twin brushed stainless steel exhaust tail pipes.

Inside the cars gets the full treatment, with Recaro sports front seats, a metallic high gloss centre console bezel, a leather-covered gear knob with ST220 logo, a leather rimmed steering wheel with metal-finish spokes, and an instrument panel which includes speedo, revcounter and fuel and water temperature gauges as well as a trip computer

At this stage it is believed Ford South Africa has not made a decision on whether or not to import the car for local consumption.
