"The first issue of Veld Toe (in the winter of 2002) was a runaway success," says Fran?s Rabe, editor.

"This confirms the demand in the Afrikaans reader market for a quality niche publication on outdoor leisure.

"Our reader research also indicated that when readers relax, they prefer to do it outdoors. They work hard and look for ways to spend their leisure time in a meaningful way with their families.

"The interest in pastimes such as nature photography, bird watching, hiking and outdoor sports, balances the pressures of modern living."

Veld Toe covers action sports (rowing, rock climbing, and surfing) and scenic destinations such as the Limpopo valley, Mozambique, Gamkaskloof and Kannaland.

In 'Oes van die see' (Harvest from the sea) Emile Joubert tells how to prepare any type of seafood on the coals.

The country?s top 4x4 routes and best campsites are given a look and there is also a lifestyle vehicle buyers' guide for 4x4s, 4x2s, double cabs, station wagons, trailers and caravans.

Veld Toe also gives practical advice for those long hikes, the best camping equipment and what to do about sunstroke and insect and snakebites.

The magazine sells for R19.50. Veld Toe is published by New Media Publishing on behalf of Media24 Magazines.
