The Fortuner is loosely based on the latest Hilux bakkie platform, and it will form part of Toyota SA's "built for export" programme for manufacture here.

The Fortuner it is the final member of Toyota's International Multi-Purpose Project (IMV) family, and will replace some Condor models.

It will be exported to other African countries and Europe.

Although the car is based on the pick-up its styling is pure SUV with hints of the Lexus RX300. Like the current Condor it is also a seven-seater.

Sophisticated suspension

Although based on the Hilux, the Fortuner is more sophisticated and boasts independent double wishbone front suspension with coil springs and stabilisers, plus a four-link rear suspension with coil springs and lateral rods.

Styling sees at the front a large bonnet scoop, quad multi-reflector headlamps and an elegant front grille design, with a muscular side profile with large wheel arches.

At the back there's a strong "greenhouse" load area with a large lift-up load door and big taillights.

Inside is a deeply recessed instrument cluster, and no fewer than 21 stowage compartments.

Safety features include ABS brakes and dual front airbags.

Engines are a 2.7 litre petrol unit producing 119 kW at 5 200 r/min with 241 Nm of torque at 3 800 r/min, and a 3-litre common rail turbo-diesel giving 122 kW at 3 400 r/min and 343 Nm of torque between 1 400 r/min and 3 200 r/min.

Although no further details are available, it is believed both 4x4 and 4x2 versions will be produced.
