The Spirit of Africa Trophy is a unique and challenging test of 4x4 driving skills for contestants at Regional Heats around South Africa. From here semi-finalists and finalists will take on the desert of Namibia to see who is the very best 4x4 team in South Africa.

The Spirit of Africa Trophy has been created by a team that is widely recognized as the very best 4x4 performers here, and around the world.

Sarel van der Merwe, South Africa's legendary motor sport icon has teamed up with Mitsubishi Motors, to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those who are serious about getting the most from 4x4 driving.

3 Stages to 4x4 glory

Stage 1 - Regional Heats

  • Heats will be held at Mitsubishi Offroad Xplorer Venues around South Africa, from 1 April to 30 June 2005.
  • Selection will be in the form of a one day competition - consisting of 4x4 skills, driving techniques, and recovery skills.
  • Successful teams will be invited to attend the 3-day elimination event in the Kalahari.
  • Your own 4x4 vehicle, with low range (for the Regional Heats only).
  • The entrance fee to Regional Heats is R650.00 per team.
  • The entrance fee covers The Spirit of Africa heat, the Venue driving fees and light refreshments for team members.

    Stage 2 - Elimination Events

  • Successful teams will be invited to attend the elimination phase in the Kalahari over three days, from 8 August to 10 September 2005.
  • All teams will use Mitsubishi vehicles during this phase.
  • The cost is R1500.00 per person and includes accommodations and food.
  • This event is in itself a challenging drive and contestants are awarded an advanced sand driving certificate by Sarel van der Merwe on completion of the course.

    Stage 3 - The Finals

  • The top twelve teams will be invited to attend the final event during October.
  • All expenses will be paid for the finalist.
  • All teams will use Mitsubishi vehicles during this phase.
  • In addition top sponsors will provide the best equipment for our contestants - as well as fantastic prices and product giveaways for the finalist.

    Plus one team will be crowned champions and receive the prestigious Spirit of Africa Trophy 2005.
