Four "adventure routes" were recently established on existing fire breaks and service roads. The roads were previously exclusively for the use of park officials.
The 4x4 routes each take four to five hours to complete, and bring tourists in much closer contact with wildlife than before, said Raymond Travers for the park.
The four routes are situated north of Shingwedzi, between Phalaborwa and Letaba, east of Satara and near Pretoriuskop.
Although the roads are not difficult to navigate, they are exclusively for 4x4s. This was done to minimize the impact on the surrounding areas.
No advance bookings can be done, as the routes will be closed after rain to allow roads to dry out.
Only six vehicles will be allowed per day.
It will cost R460 per vehicle per day. An additional R100 deposit will be required, which is refundable when the vehicles check out. This is a precaution to ensure nobody gets stuck in the wilderness.
