Hummer is back, but not the way we remember it.

A few years ago, Hummer was killed off because it didn't fit into the new narrative of where the automotive world was headed in. Hummer's H2 and H3 vehicles were too out of place in a contemporary world, and the technologies used back then were too old to keep Hummer relevant.

The decision was made to pull Hummer from the market and retire it to the automotive graveyard. It was widely assumed that Hummer would never see the light of day again, but one should never accept things too quickly.

As is the craze these days, GMC, Hummer's parent company, gave the new-age Hummer the electric treatment, far-removing it from the gas-guzzling monstrosities we've come to love and appreciate. Called the Hummer EV (electric vehicle), the bakkie, or pick-up as it's known several global markets, is unlike anything we've seen from the brand before and will it take Hummer to completely new heights and uncharted territories.

Massive figures

The stats accompanying the Hummer EV are startling, but in a good way. Four models will be introduced over the next four years, starting with the Hummer EV Edition 1 in 2021. This model's electric powertrain, expected to consist of three electric motors, will produce up to 1000 horsepower (750kW) and 15 592Nm of torque. Yes, you read that right.

0-100km/h, you ask? How do three seconds grab you?

In 2022, 2023, and 2024 a new model will be added, each becoming more affordable, and with slightly less power and range. The Hummer EV2, expected in 2024, will have two electric motors that will produce an expected 466kW and 10 033Nm. GMC is targeting a driving range of more than 560km on the Hummer EV Edition 1, while the Hummer EV2 is said to cover a distance of around 400km.

Slotting in between these two models is the Hummer EV3x (coming 2022) and Hummer EV2X (2023).

Off-road prowess

GMC knows that Hummer is renowned for its off-road abilities and made sure that the new bakkie sees to that reputation. Apart from 35-inch tyres and already impressive ground clearance, an Extract Mode feature will help you get out of a tricky situation. Extract Mode raises the ride height by an additional six inches (152mm).

CrabWalk is another feature that better utilizes the Hummer EV's four-wheel steering. When activated, the rear wheels can turn up to 10 degrees, which will allow the vehicle to drive diagonally at crawling speeds.

The Hummer EV has protective covering around the differentials and battery pack, and 'full underbody armour' underneath it to prevent obstacles from damaging the bakkie's belly.

It is highly unlikely that the Hummer EV will reach South Africa, but we can only hope that local market conditions become favourable for the brand to make its return.
