Pajero Sport Exceed Rivals

Mistubishi's seven-seat Pajero Sport is up against several formidable rivals in South Africa. The Exceed 4x4, priced at R679 995, sits at the top of the three-model Pajero Sport line-up. It carries an R20 000 premium over the model it is based on, but also in the company of reckoned rivals.

The Fortuner, one of SA's most popular vehicles, is the Pajero Sport's most revered rival. Eight models make up the range, with pricing ranging from R520 900 to R753 900. Against the Pajero Sport Exceed, the Fortuner 2.8 GD-6 Epic Black 4x2 automatic (R683 500) is the Mitsubishi's closest rival in terms of price, but the Epic Black 4x4 is R70 400 more expensive than the 4x4. Regardless, the Fortuner is and will remain the most popular choice of the vehicles listed here.

Ford's Everest is another popular choice among local buyers. Though it sells in fewer numbers than the Fortuner, it very often trumps both the Pajero Sport and Isuzu mu-X. Seven models make up the Everest range, all consisting of 4x2 and 4x4 models, powered by a variety of engine choices. The Everest 2.0 Bi-Turbo XLT automatic (R693 300) is priced closer to the Pajero Sport Exceed, but the 4WD variant will set you back R744 500. And if you want a special edition Everest, the Bi-Turbo 4WD Limited retails for R819 400.

For 2020, Isuzu refreshed its mu-X seven-seat SUV. Several updates to the exterior and interior gave the SUV a fresh leash on life, but mechanically everything remains unchanged. The vehicle is still powered by Isuzu's 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine, with a six-speed automatic gearbox sending power to either the rear wheels (R643 100) or all four tyres (R712 200). Only two models make up the line-up.
