A video of a Cape Town man taking his family’s helper for her very first driving lesson is making headlines — and for all the right reasons.
Caroline Ndlovu has been working for Joshua Rubin’s family for more than 10 years and expressed interest in learning to drive.
“She’s wanted to learn how to drive for about two to three years — ever since I got my license” Rubin told News24.
Last week Rubin decided to get Ndlovu behind the wheel.
“He told me to switch off the iron and come! I wanted to know if he was serious,” Ndlovu said.
The video has since garnered more than 220 000 views on Facebook.
“I’ve been making videos since the age of ten and Caroline has always been the star of them,” Rubin said. “I reckon this is definitely the funniest one to date.”
“She’s definitely the funniest character I have ever met.”
Rubin says they were driving around for roughly 30 minutes in the Sunset Beach area, between Blouberg and Milnerton in Cape Town.
“I was excited and scared, but focused,” Ndlovu said.
The dynamic duo even made a stop at the beach before continuing with the lesson.
About Ndlovu’s almost-accident Rubin said: “Fortunately my handbrake is pretty strong so we managed to stop in time.”
Rubin says he had no intention of sharing the almost five minute long video on social media, but decided to do so after being prompted by his Instagram followers.
"I had posted only snippets of our lesson on Instagram. The feedback was so positive. People asked me to post more.”
Rubin told News24 that the pair spent all of Wednesday morning just laughing reading comments on the video.
As for Ndlovu, she hopes to be able to drive to the garage or to town on her own one day.
“But I need more lessons before then,” she laughed.
