• BMW South Africa announced a three-year deal with vehicle charge point operator GridCars.

• GridCars has over 150 charging points across the country, including a 'charging highway' on the N1 and N3.

• The deal with GridCars coincides with the introduction of the Mini Cooper SE, the country's most affordable electric vehicle.

The South African arm of German carmaker BMW announced it has concluded a three-year deal with electric vehicle charge point operator, GridCars, EngineeringNews reported.

This means BMW i3 owners can have access to over 150 of GridCars' nationwide charging stations. By registering on the company's app owners of the i3 can use one 'chargenow' card to access both the GridCars and BMW charge points at dealers and various shopping centres around the country.

BMW SA is launching the most affordable electric vehicle (EV), the Mini Cooper SE, imminently. It has a starting price of R642 000.

BMW SA CEO Tim Abbot said:"As a very exciting Mini model is added to further expand the BMW group's leading position in electrification, we now have an opportunity to also act on our loyal BMW i customers' advice."

The Mini Cooper SE is powered by a electric motor producing 135kW and 270Nm. It accelerates from standstill to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds and features two-stage brake energy recuperation that can be configured using a toggle switch. It has claimed range of 217 kilometres.
