WATCH | China's new M-Byte electric SUV takes the fight to European automakers

Just about every automaker these days is making the transition from combustion engines to that of fully electric or hybrid systems.

Chinese automaker Byton has followed this blueprint with the production model of its electric SUV - the innovative new M-Byte.

Technological innovation

Besides its futuristic appearance, the SUV is packed with convenient features. Driver face recognition, touch and control gesture and reduced number of physical buttons further enhances the practicality trait.

Just like Mercedes-Benz' MBUX system, the M-Byte is fitted with a 48" horizontal curved display, while the driver can make use of a 7" multi-touch display on the steering wheel. In addition, the front seats can inwardly rotate as well.

As far as power is concerned, the SUV makes use of two electric engines, one positioned on each axle with power figures of 200kW when powered by the rear wheels and 300kW when all four wheels are in motion.

Top speed is limited to 190km/h while the 0-100km/h distance is covered in 7.5-seconds (RWD) and 5.5-seconds (AWD) respectively.

Just like most SUV, trunk space here is large - between 550 and 1 450-litres to be exact depending on how much you need with the seats up or down. Byton claims a range of 430 to 550km while 0-80% charging time can be done in 35 minutes.
