This has got to be the one of the scariest things a Dakar participant has to deal with.
Whilst partaking in Stage 10 of the 2020 Dakar rally, Toyota Gazoo Racing driver, Fernando Alonso, charged towards a sand dune. The goal was simple: get to the edge, head down, and continue on. Unfortunately, Alonso approached the hill at the wrong angle, sending him and navigator, Marc Coma, barreling down the dune.
The duo were left unscathed, but their Hilux bakkie came off worse; shattering the windscreen and breaking the suspension in the process. In the overall classification, Alonso and Coma are in 14th place, more than 4hr34min behind overall leader, Carlos Sainz (Mini).
The Dakar concludes on 17 January 2020.
