- M8 Competition boasts 460kW / 750Nm
- Sport Auto lapped the flagship performance BMW around the Nürburgring
- The Lamborghini Aventador SVJ currently holds the quickest road-legal car lap time
BMW's flagship performance model is the M8 Competition. Based on the 8 Series Coupe it shares the M5's 4.4-litre twin turbocharged engine with 460kW and 750Nm.
An eight-speed automatic transfers the power to all four wheels and BMW says the centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential ensures loss-free transfer of the engine’s huge power to the road.
Of course, if you're a BMW purist and prefer all that grunt to the rear wheels there's a button for that. It boasts a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.3 seconds.
The M8 Comp is the centre of attention in a video from German motoring publication Sport Auto. They put it to the test on Germany's famous Nürburgring track.
Sport Auto journalist and part-time test driver Christian Gebhardt is behind the wheel with the M8 wearing regular Pirelli P Zero road tyres.
The F92 model weighs in at 1960kg and is close to five metres long, no lightweight supercar then. Gebhardt managed to set a time of 7:32.79 minutes. Deeply impressive if one considers it was done on road tyres and a journalist behind the wheel.
According to Autocar, the quickest road-legal car to lap the circuit is the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ with a time of 6:44.97.
UK motoring journalist and Top Gear USA co-host, Jethro Bovingdon, reacted on Twitter to the video, saying: "Big, heavy cars are fast in 2020, aren’t they? Also, I’m missing the Nurburgring a lot."
Post lockdown trip anyone?? Check out Christian’s lap in the Pista on Sport Auto YT channel, too. It’s a rocketship. Very much want to try the M8 Comp. That is all."
