WATCH: Formula 1's 'Halo' safety device explained

Germany - More than one year after it was first tested, and after consideration of a recent alternative, the "halo" cockpit protection system will be used on Formula 1 in the 2018 season.

Motorsport's governing body (the FIA), began testing the system prior to the 2016 season, finally approved it July 2017 following a meeting of its strategy group which all F1 teams attended.

Safety at a cost

One of the issues will be price, with insiders reporting that a single 'halo' will cost somewhere between €13 000 and €24 000.

Mercedes-AMG Technical Director James Allison explains everything you need to know about the 'halo' in a video posted on the Mercedes-AMG Youtube channel.

He explains that difficulties such as weight and aerodynamics could be a stumbling block for constructors teams in the new season.
