Johannesburg - Following GM’s exit from South Africa, Isuzu was quick to establish its standalone business in Port Elizabeth. Isuzu Motors made an official debut in PE earlier in February.
This came after completely taking over the General Motors South Africa facilities in Struandale. The Japanese automaker also announced and showcased its new SUV (sports utility vehicle), a seven-seater called the MU-X.
Arrives later in 2018
It was announced by IMSA (Isuzu Motors South Africa) technical services executive, Dominic Rimmer, that the company has completed extensive market research before deciding on bringing the vehicle to SA. However, in recent months there were already speculations about the vehicle hitting our shores. It is now confirmed that the MU-X will arrive later this year.
The MU-X will be competing in the market against the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. It also shares its platform, body structure and cabin with the Chevrolet Trailblazer.
At this point, there’s been no clarification as to whether the Isuzu’s new SUV will be locally built alongside the KB in the Struandale factory.
Furthermore, specs and pricing are being kept under wraps. In terms of engines, Isuzu SA has mentioned that a 3.0-litre turbodiesel will be offered. Rimmer said the MU-X will be a class leader in fuel economy. It will also be available in 2x4 and 4x4 configurations and supported by a five-link rear suspension.
The Isuzu MU-X was first introduced in Thailand in 2013. It then made its way to the Philippines, where it currently holds market leader status, and to Australia.
Rimmer went on to say, “We are excited about the addition of the MU-X into the Isuzu portfolio, offering customers an SUV originating from a strong brand that is trusted and known for reliability by South Africans.”
