Wheels24 reader Nazir Dawood shares his love for his Lexus cars, and why he keeps choosing the brand.

Earlier in 2020, Wheels24 contributor Robin Classen wrote about how popular Lexus is in international markets, especially the US, yet it doesn't follow suite here in South Africa. And, based on the automaker's striking designs and good products, it's quite bizarre that it's still such a niche brand.

Classen says: "Many younger-generation enthusiasts have a misconception that Lexus is strictly an 'old man's car'. This type of assumption is attributed to the bulkier designs of the older GS, LS, and IS models, and also the fact that the majority of older consumers were choosing the brand as a retirement car - right place, wrong time sort of scenario.

"Lexus should be selling much, much more than what the current Naamsa sales suggest. The problem is that most people think that only German manufacturers are the measure of luxury, so your C-Class, A4, and 3 Series become the obvious choices without having to consider anything else."

OPINION | Lexus is incredibly popular in global markets, but hardly here in SA and it's baffling

The article sparked Wheels24 reader Nazir Dawood, a Lexus owner, to share his passion for the brand and why he keeps choosing this automaker as his vehicle of choice.

Dawood says: "I previously owned a 2000 model IS200 which impressed me so much that I bought the IS250 SE as an upgrade.

"I then owned a 2008 Lexus IS250 SE from 2014 to 2017. It was pearl white, and in a spotless condition when I bought it at Fordicks BMW in Tygervalley. Even the tyres on the vehicle were brand new; 245 rears and 225 in front. Everything worked perfectly.

"By the time I sold the car everything was in great working order, even though I skipped a service. In the three years I owned it, I only spent a total of R6800 on the car. That included a new battery and brake pads, and I never had any mechanical issues with it.

"It was time for a service and I had to replace tyres. Due to business change, I sold the car with 57 000km on the clock. I was planning to buy a similar one but then Covid-19 struck, and my work came to a standstill.

"I am on my 31st car but honestly it was the best car I ever had. Beauty, comfort, all the bells and whistles like navigation, Bluetooth, heatable seats, memory seats, camera, a DVD player, etc. I did some changes to spruce up the exterior at little cost.

"It's a brand I would recommend to anyone if the previous owners maintained their cars well. The quality of the car is  excellent. I did not have a tear on the seats nor a crack in the dash by the time I sold car which was by then nine years old. Parts for the car are expensive though fortunately I did not need any. A boot spoiler cost R8000 so I stayed without it. A small light bulb cost over R70, where a Mercedes one cost around R12 at the time.

"Fortunately, the quality of the car is good so are the components that's why so it was a 'get-in-and-go' car.

"Those are original Lexus mags I had on my car, I just sprayed every second spoke to make it look like a star mag.

For a car that has so many luxury features, it actually cost me nothing to maintain. I did not put in a drop of water or oil (except when serviced) in the three years I had it.

"I have gone through the German range but if I am ever in a position to buy another car again, it will definitely be a Lexus."
