Dear Mercedes, here's where your X-Class bakkie went wrong - SA readers

When news first broke that Mercedes was going to launch a premium bakkie more than five years ago, it took the motoring world by storm and everyone anticipated its concept reveal. 

The excitement was rife, but it was short-lived when people realised the X-Class would share its platform with Nissan's Navara. Was it just then a Japanese bakkie with a premium three-star badge? 

But then it launched globally and as soon as it arrived in South Africa, the hype had already faded. Its exorbitant pricing was too much. Sales did not take off, and within its first year, only over 16 000 bakkies were sold, and even less the year thereafter. It was doomed from the beginning.
