In April 2013 Wheels24 reported that a man convicted of culpable homicide after crashing into a group of motorcyclists, had offered to pay the victims' families compensation
Indi Hamalindi Chiyabu crashed into three motorcyclists, killing two of and severely injuring a third. He has offered the families R700 000 and was willing to negotiate a "six figure amount", the Pretoria News reported.
Wheels24 reader MARC LAUBSCHER, secretary for the Pretoria Bikers' Council, points out a possible misunderstanding:
“In response to the article posted on the Hummer case, and a response from a reader of your site, the following:
I am the secretary for the Pretoria Bikers' Council and a member of the Christian Motorcyclists' Association, of which the three victims were also members.
With regards to the offer of compensation made to the families... What has been offered may have sounded like an attempt to get out of jail but the prosecutor in the case has made clear to all that this would NOT be considered.
If compensation were made to the family, this would have no bearing on the final judgement, and that the aim of the prosecution is to make sure that the accused spends time in jail.”
