Boty: What about KTM's 1190?

Wheels24’s resident biking guru DAVE FALL was a judge in the South African Bike of the Year back in July 2013 and shared his views with you. In August 2013, we got the result...

AND THE WINNER IS...

Judges were told to vote for their top six bikes over a two-day test in Gauteng. Judges tested the cream of South Africa’s bikes crop at Midvaal Raceway and on the open road for 10km loops on a route from the Vaal dam to Magalies.

The winner of the 2013 South African Bike of the Year is… the BMW R1200GS. Second place went to the KTM 1190 Adventure and third to the Triumph Daytona E675R.

According to the organisers: “While it may seem unfair to try to compare a KTM 1190 Adventure with a Triumph Daytona 675R and a Suzuki GW250 Inazuma, each bike was rated on its own merits and against previous versions of that bike and not against any other bike in the competition.

Wheels24 reader DENNIS VAN ASWEGEN shares his thoughts:

“In Africa, people will vote for things that are not the best just because they have been around for a long time. In general people resist change, even if it's for the better, for example the Toyota Hilux, BMW 1200GS and Robert Mugabe.

“Sad to see the most exciting bike to hit South African roads in 2013, the KTM 1190 Adventure, lost to an old man’s bike, the BMW1200GS. The GS is as exciting as yesterday's news.”
