• Drag race sees an all Porsche affair.
• The new 911 Turbo S models line up against the GT3.
• It's turbo vs normally-aspirated in this latest drag race.
Pitting high performance production cars against each other in a drag race has become highly addictive and these videos garner millions of views.
The latest instalment is an all-Porsche affair. The 911 Turbo S Coupe and Cabriolet line line up against a GT3.
Launched earlier this year, the 911 Turbo S is the latest 992 iteration of the model and has a top speed of 330km/h. Its 3.8-litre engine features a pair of VGT turbochargers produces 51kW more than its predecessor to peak at a dizzying 478kW and 800Nm, 50Nm more than before.
The numbers related to the Turbo S are insane, fitted with a eight-speed PDK transmission it'll knock 100km/h out of the park in 2.7 seconds. More impressive is that it'll hit 200km/h in under nine seconds from standstill.
The all-wheel drive system is key to ensuring traction is kept at optimum levels. The car sits on a track that's 42mm wider at the front axle and 10mm wider at the rear.
The drop-top model will hit 100km/h from standstill in 2.8 seconds and like the fixed roof model, run out of puff at 330km/h.
Naturally-aspirated versus turbocharging
The GT3 of course, is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat-six that produces 372kW and 460Nm. The pair of Turbo S models have more than 100kW more than the GT3 but lose out in the weight department.
The GT3 tips the scales at 1430 kilograms compared to the Turbo S Coupe that weighs 1650kg and the Cabrio that sports a weight of 1710kg.
Porsche says. The 911 Turbo S is on sale in South Africa, with the 911 Turbo S Coupé and Cabriolet are priced at R3 771 000 and R3 956 000, respectively. Included in the price is a three-year or 100 000km Driveplan.
Carwow says: 'Here we go Porsche fanboys… This one’s for you! We’ve got our hands on the new 911 Turbo S coupe, the new 911 Turbo S cabriolet, and a 911 991.2 GT3!"
"Of course, the two turbos put down the same amount of power from their 3.8-litre flat-six twin-turbos, producing 478kW and 800Nm of torque! As for the GT3, it’s powered by a 4-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six which can produce 372kW and 460Nm."
