• Mercedes-AMG produces SUVs and hot hatchbacks.

• A drag race between the G63 and A45 S pits the brand's performance models against one another.

• The G63 has 430kW while the A45 S only has 310kW, but it weighs 700 kilograms less than the SUV.

Two Mercedes-AMG models line up in this family feud with the 2.2 tonne G63 taking on the latest, and smallest AMG to the party, the A45 S in this week's CarWow drag race

These two vehicles might look very different but they both have turbocharged engines, automatic gearboxes, and four-wheel drive.

The SUV is powered by a 430kW 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo engine, most of the power is sent to the rear with a (40:60) split and it has three differential locks for when the going gets tough.

It's fitted with a 9-speed automatic transmission, and utilises a double wishbone independent front suspension and the adaptive adjustable damping.

The V8 engine is the main focus here and Mercedes says the G63 will power to 100km/h from standstill in 4.5 seconds. This dynamic performance is maintained up to the limited maximum speed of 220km/h (or 240km/h with the AMG Driver’s package).

On the other end of the spectrum is the latest hot hatch from Mercedes, the A45 S. Its local arrival has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The A45 S' engine dominates the headlines, it is the world's most powerful production four-cylinder engine yet. The latest M139 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine develops 310kW and 500Nm. Power is up by 30kW and torque has increased by 25Nm. It also powers the CLA 45 S.

These cars push out more power than any Audi or BMW in the compact performance car segment, and are capable of reaching 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds (that's not a typo).

As mentioned, power is sent to all four wheels via an eight speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That all-wheel-drive system adds weight to the car and the A45 S tips the scales at 1560kg.

The A45 S is a seriously quick car; it offers prodigious grip and weighty steering feel that adds to the excitement of the hugely powerful engine.

But can it beat the more powerful but heavier G63? Watch the video below.

Carwow says: "First up we have the AMG G63, with its 4-litre twin-turbo V8 it produces 430kW and 850Nm of torque! As for the AMG A45 S - it's carrying a 2-litre 4 cyl. turbocharged engine, that'll produce 310kW and 500Nm of torque!

"So on the face of it, the G63 looks like it could easily overpower the A45. But then again, we haven't mentioned the weight, and the G comes in at a humongous 700kg MORE than the hot hatch! So with that in mind, surely it'll be an easy win for the A45, right? You'll have to keep watching to find out!"
