These cars have unique triple exhaust systems

We're more accustomed to seeing single, double or even quad exhaust tailpiece systems but three is just unheard of, right?

While its highly unlikely to ever see it on a normal road-going car, such exhaust configurations exist and are more akin to high-performance cars where carbon dioxide has to be expelled just as fast as oxygen enters through the intake plenum.

Three's a crowd

Because three is such an awkward number for tailpipes, the only way you can possibly mount it onto a car's rear is centrally - either in a triangular or horizontal manner.

Automotive engineers are always experimenting and finding new ways to make the distribution of power more linear, whether it be an engine's positioning or having certain components engage electronically at a specific time.

One day the need for exhaust systems will become redundant or merely be used to enhance a car's overall appearance.

So while the possibility still exists of being able to see and hear various exhaust systems, below are a few examples of cars with three-piped exiting rear ends:

1. Lexus LFA

Where triple-piped rear ends are concerned, it does not get better than the Lexus LFA. Packed with a naturally aspirated, 4.8-litre V10 engine that makes 412kW, it is nothing short of sonorous.

Many people, including the likes of Jay Leno, praised just how good the hand-built V10 sounds, even chief engineer Haruhiko Tanahashi described its sound as 'the roar of an angel.'

2. Ferrari 458 Italia

Ferrari are quite possibly the architects of the most beautiful sounding cars. From the Enzo to the F40, and LaFerrari, there are no shortage of options. The 458 Italia can also be added to the list of 'heavenly tunes'.

A 4.5-litre, V8 engine that churns out 419kW is responsible for disturbing the peace. Some owners even went a step further by fitting aftermarket exhaust systems to an already loud car.

3. Honda Civic Type R

Moving onto a more subtle kind of fast, the FK8 Honda Civic Type R is next up on the list and is by no means a slouch. It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that sends 228kW to the front wheels. But its the peculiar rear-end that is of interest here.

Technically, it consists of dual exhausts and not three even though the visuals say otherwise. The middle 'tailpiece' is actually a sound muffler simply there to reduce noise inside the car when travelling at speed.

4. Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ

You've probably never heard of or seen this car before in your life. The Mitsubishi Minica Dangan ZZ was made specifically for the Japanese market. It's not the fastest thing in the world, pushing out a mere 47kW from a 600cc engine, but it did have a bizarre-looking exhaust tailpiece.

Even though it does make use of a single exhaust system, the tailpiece itself has three separate, circular exits looking like type of knuckle-buster.
