Slowdown for what? Traffic in India is crazy!

accreditation

Cape Town - One can feel the collective sigh of relief from South African motorists as traffic levels to and from work have subsided significantly since schools have closed and many locals are on holiday.

My commute to work now takes a mere 20 minutes instead of the usual hour during the 'normal' busy period.

"Traffic is chaotic"

However, one place in the world where traffic is still heavily congested is India. News24's Nicholas Pawson who is currently visiting the sub-continent country, sent us a video of his driver navigating his way through a maze of cars, motorcyles, buses and pedestrians.

Pawson said: "Everything they say about the cities is true (based on my experience in Chennai). Traffic is chaotic, it's hot and smelly. Millions of scooters and hooting is a favourite past time in India."

Wheels24's Sean Parker, who has driven in India, said: "I've experienced what it's like to drive in peak-hour traffic in Mumbai and it was one of the most adrenaline-filled experiences I've had. It's imperative to hoot to make other motorists aware of where you in relation to them."

Watch: Bumper to bumper traffic in Chennai, India.

Pawson sent an image of gridlocked traffic in Chennai and said: "I took a taxi in Chennai to the bus station and suddenly the traffic was gridlocked. I eventually got out and walked the rest of the way. This was the cause (a big argument).
