The Volkswagen Golf GTI may not be the most powerful hot hatch in its segment, but it’s shown that a lot of power is not the be all and end all in driving enjoyment.

Well, tell that to Mountune who took the GTI under hand and gave it a good dose of extra power. How much power? 114kW, to be exact.

Mountune fitted the Golf R’s turbocharger to the GTI’s engine to produce the insane amount of power.

Two-stage tuning

But the GTI didn’t get its 283kW after just one visit to Mountune. The first stage of the engine modification saw the standard power outputs increase from 169kW/350Nm to 228kW/475Nm – the same as the Golf R, put torque is up 75Nm.

The second stage saw Mountune fit the Golf R’s turbocharger to the GTI’s engine, which saw power increase even further to 283kW and 510Nm. That is insane!

Mountune said on its official website: "The mountune52 Stage 2+ Power Upgrade delivers breathtaking performance for the Mk7 and Mk7.5 Golf GTI (including GTI Performanace Pack models) with either manual or DSG transmissions.

"Based on over a decade of tuning vehicles to pass OEM sign-off, the mountune52 Stage 2+ offers the highest quality calibration, providing improved drivability, response and, of course, a substantial increase in both power and torque, even over our Stage 1 upgrade, all vigorously durability tested to provide peace of mind that reliability is maintained."

REVIEW: A swan song to the Volkswagen Golf GTi

"The Stage 2+ builds upon the existing recommended hardware in the mountune52 Stage 1 upgrade and in addition replaces the existing turbocharger with the latest-spec IS38 (as used natively on the Golf R)."

Mountune is an aftermarket tuner who worked exclusively on Ford vehicles, but created a sub-division, Mountune52, under which other vehicles – like the GTI and R, can be tuned.
