It might not seem like a fair match-up, with BMW's flagship M-car the M8 packing 460kW and 750Nm in Competition form and the M2 with only 302kW and 550Nm

The M8 uses the same engine from the M5, a massive 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and sends power to all four wheels.

But - and it's a big but - the M8 weighs 2.3 tonnes, while the smaller M2 weighs just over two tonnes.

Rear-wheel drive fun

The M2 puts its power down exclusively via the rear wheels, and employs a seven-speed dual clutch 'box. We drove it last year and enjoyed how big of a difference the S55 engine makes to the car.

The traction control light flickers like a lightning during a Highveld thunderstorm and the straight six-cylinder noise sounds utterly fantastic.

Its certainly won over many fans and despite being the entry-level M car it punches above its weight in sheer pace off the line, BMW claim a 4.2 seconds 0-100km/h and it's great to drive. In fact, one of the UK's best motoring hacks, Chris Harris, recently bought one.

But can it cause an upset against the M8 Competition in a drag race and brake test?

There's only one way to find out.. check out the clip from Carwow below:
