With the exhilarating Red Bull Box Cart Race making its comeback to South Africa later this year, we take a whizz down memory lane and look back at some memorable moments in history of the event.
Drivers take their hand-built efforts down the hay-baled course hoping to log the fastest time of the day - and stay in one piece. With paper thin tyres and outrageously unstable designs, Red Bull Box Cart Race is as much about style and fun as it is about speed.
Here’s a snapshot of our top six memorable Red Bull Box Cart moments:
Known as Red Bull Box Cart Race in some countries, the first race took place in Brussels in 2000.

Throughout the 18-year history of the event there have been more than a hundred editions around the world in far-flung countries like Australia, Belgium, Mexico as well as South Africa. The race has attracted participants who are fueled by imagination, creativity and a ton of guts.

Apart from speed, contestants are judged on their wacky, out of this world imagination and ability to translate their ideas into a box cart. One of the most memorable designs is the 2017 Red Bull Box Cart Race in London, which came from the aptly-named ‘The Hair Force One team’. The team produced an oversized and uncanny replica of Agent Orange.

Fortunately for the nostalgics among us, who seek a simpler place and time, Red Bull Box Cart race has inspired designs that have brought our old time favorite TV shows and pop icons to life. We've seen the likes of Rick and Morty, The Beatles, Scooby Doo hurtling down the track at many races around the world.

In 2015, then the youngest Formula 1 driver in the championship, Max Verstappen competed in the Dutch event with a replica of his Scuderia Toro Rosso STR10 – this replica being as fierce as the real deal!

Red Bull Box Cart Race attracts everyone from amateur racers and car enthusiasts to fun seekers and global motoring brands such as Aston Martin. Last year’s campaign saw Aston Martin narrowly missing out on a historic victory as they finished second at Red Bull Box Cart Race in London, proving that the event is action packed and unpredictable.

With the first South African event having taken place in 2004, the event has captured the hearts of many local speed enthusiasts, attracting more than 20 000 spectators with each of the four races to date. The last race was held in 2010 at Immink Drive in Soweto, Johannesburg where Team Zooma’s bath and shower head-fitted box cart won the competition.
