JOHANNESBURG - To coincide with the 2014 Ranger Odyssey off-road challenge, Ford has unveiled a limited-edition version of the locally-built Ranger - the Odyssey Ranger.

The double-cab, off-road version of Ford’s popular bakkie will be fitted with an accessory pack that includes a snorkel, allowing drivers to cross deeper bodies of water without endangering the engine.

EMBARK ON YOUR OWN ODYSSEY

It's also equipped with a steel bull-bar to protect the front end and a differential-guard to protect its running gear.

Gavin Golightly, marketing manager for Ford South Africa, said: “This year the general public will get a chance to drive their own Odyssey Ranger.”

Based on the XL-Plus model, other extras include a rubberised load box and black 17" alloys.

AVAILABLE IN DOUBLE-CAB ONLY

Power is provided by the 2.2-litre Duratorq engine built at the Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth. It produces 110kW/375Nm and is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, a locking rear differential, as well as a transfer case offering high- and low-range four-wheel drive.

Pricing for the double-cab model, including the Odyssey accessory pack, is R415 750.

All Ranger derivatives come with a four-year or 120 000km warranty and a five-year or 90 000km service plan with service intervals of 15 000km.

2014 RANGE ODYSSEY

The inaugural Ranger Odyssey challenge in 2013 saw ten finalists setting up camp and driving through some of Africa’s most gruelling environments. Contestants embarked on an action-packed cross-continent adventure, with only the toughest progressing to the final rounds.

Golightly said: “We set out to find the hardiest contestants to take on Africa’s most demanding conditions,we wanted a personality that was as tough as the Ranger itself.”

The 2014 Ranger Odyssey from September 8 - 20, will see competitors travelling through Namibia over two days, 13 stages and 2500km.

The winning team, consisting of two participants, will stand a chance to drive a Odyssey Ranger vehicle for a year including a R5 000p/m fuel allowance.
