Renault Koleos: Overview

2010-06-21 11:49
The debut of the new Koleos compact sports utility vehicle marks a milestone for the Renault brand. Koleos is the first compact SUV to bear the Renault badge, and opens significant new horizons for the marque, both globally, and here in South Africa.

Hugely versatile, the Koleos is equally at home on tar and dirt. It provides smooth and secure on-road driving, yet isn't afraid to roll up its sleeves and tackle the rough stuff. Comfort and safety are matched by genuine off-road ability, while space and practicality rival those of a compact MPV.

Available in full-time all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive variants, the Koleos provides first-class motoring for driver and passengers alike. Spacious seating, pliant suspension, intuitive ergonomics and intelligent practicality make for a benchmark motoring experience.

A choice of eco-friendly petrol and turbodiesel engines, linked to either manual or CVT automatic gearboxes, ensure that the Koleos deliver satisfying performance in conjunction with frugal fuel consumption and EURO IV-compliant emissions standards.

Safety standards are high across the board, with a full complement of active and passive safety features, designed in the first instance to prevent accidents, and to protect occupants when a collision become inevitable.

Despite its tall stance and SUV presence, the Renault Koleos is compact and user-friendly. Its wieldy dimensions – 4.52 metres long, 1.85 metres wide – ensure nimble reactions in city motoring and off the beaten track.

The tall stance benefits visibility and exudes a certain reassuring robustness, but the smooth and balanced styling also hints at crossover versatility. Wide-opening doors and the split rear tailgate add practicality to the Koleos package.

Space and light are key elements of the roomy cabin, with intuitive operation a further, fundamental theme. For the driver, the controls and switchgear are easy to identify and simple to use, with a strong emphasis on efficient ergonomics and user-friendliness.

Key controls are located on the steering wheel column or within easy reach of the driver, while the information displays are located in the low-profile dashboard, allowing easy monitoring without impairing forward vision.

Standard equipment is comprehensive across all models to augment the positive and effortless motoring experience provided by the Koleos. The driving position can be tailored and fine-tuned to suit individual presence.

Chasis and suspension

While its raised stance and spacious interior confirm the Koleos' unmistakable SUV identity, it delivers a dynamic and precise motoring experience more akin to that of a conventional sedan. Handling is crisp, steering precise and the ride quality smooth and comfortable.

Notable only by its absence is the body roll often associated with raised-suspension vehicles, ensuring that the Koleos always feels sure-footed and predictable.

At the core of the Koleos' fine-tune handling is a fully independent suspension, consisting of front MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear axle, while gas-filled dampers and anti-roll bars further augment the Renault's confident ride.

In line with its all-terrain capability, ground clearance comes to 206 mm, with associated approach and departure angles of 27 and 31 degrees respectively.

Engines and drivestrain

The new Renault Koleos is offered with a choice of advanced petrol and turbodiesel engines. The TR25 petrol unit is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder DOHC unit delivering 126 kW at 6 000 r/min and 226 Nm at 4 4000 r/min. The engine is Euro 4 compliant.

The MR9 turbodiesel engine is a second-generation common-rail design with a 1 995 cc capacity and four valves per cylinder. Maximum output is 127 kW at 4 000 r/min, while the torque peak of 360 Nm is achieved at 2 000 r/min.

The Koleos is offered in both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions. The 4x4 line-up consists of two petrol models – one with a six-speed manual gearbox, the other with a CVT automatic transmission – and a six-speed manual diesel derivative. The Koleos 4x2 is only available with the petrol powerplant linked to the six-speed manual gearbox.

The advanced 4x4 drivetrain is a product of the Nissan-Renault alliance and is shared with the latest Nissan X-Trail. It automatically distributes torque between the front and rear axles via an electronic coupler, depending on traction requirements.

In normal on-road conditions, drive is purely to the front wheels. The All-Mode 4x4 system determines the torque split when traction loss starts occurring. The system also integrates with the Renault's active safety systems, adjusting the torque split to counter under or oversteer.

The Koleos can be locked in two-wheel drive mode if required, while a 4x4 lock mode provides optimal grip when traction is compromised, such as on loose gravel, sand or snow. Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist are standard on Dynamique Premium models.

The high-output, high-efficiency powertrains employed in the new Koleos ensure brisk, effortless performance, while also allowing economical fuel consumption and low emissions.

In six-speed manual form, the petrol-powered Koleos 2.5 4x4 achieves a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.3 seconds, and a top speed of 194 km/h. Combined-cycle fuel consumption comes to 9.9 litres/100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating is 237 g/km.

Equipped with the CVT transmission, the Koleos 2.5 4x4 also has a 194 km/h top speed, consumes 9,9 litres/100 km in the combined cycle, and has a 237 g/km CO2 emissions rating. The 4x2 manual version reaches 100 km/h from rest in 9.0 sec, and has a 193 km/h top speed. Combined cycle fuel consumption comes to 9.6 litres/100 km, with a 230 g/km CO2 emissions rating.

The Koleos 2.0 dCi turbodiesel 4x4 is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox only. It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and has a top speed potential of 191 km/h. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 7.9l/100 km, while the CO2 emissions rating comes to 209 g/km.

Practical versatility is a further hallmark of the Renault Koleos. A key example is the split-opening, clamshell-design tailgate. The upper part can be opened separately when space is limited, while still allowing items of up to a metre long to be loaded. Full access to the cargo space is provided when the lower half is also folded down. The Koleos offers a class-leading 1,07 m boot aperture.

Other practical features include the modular seating arrangements with its 60:40 split rear bench seat, which can be folded down from the boot. When folded, they provide a completely flat cargo floor, and a luggage capacity of 1 380 litres (450 litres with the seats in place).

A multipurpose retention net with various securing hooks, a front passenger seat that folds down to form a table or to allow extra-long items to be loaded, and the ski trap in the rear bench seat are further practical features.

Additional stowage is provided by a plethora of cubbies and binnacles, including a refrigerated glove compartment, under-seat drawers, underfoot compartments, door panel binnacles, cup holders and an underfloor compartment in the boot.

Space and comfort

Much effort has gone into enhancing passenger comfort in the new Renault Koleos. Sound insulation and vibration reduction have been consistent priorities, thanks to features such as engine balancing shafts, acoustic windscreens and special soundproofing materials.

Space utilisation is superb, allowing record levels of headroom and kneeroom for front occupants, and exceptional headroom and legroom at the rear. Wide-opening doors and generous legroom also enhance entry and egress.
