Renault Koleos: Model range

accreditation
The new Renault Koleos range launched in South Africa consists of four models, spanning two engine choices, two gearbox options and two drivetrain configurations.

The most affordable member of the crossover line-up is the Koleos Dynamique 2.5 16V 4x2. It employs a new-generation petrol engine with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.

Fully Euro 4-compliant, the four-cylinder fuel-injected unit has a maximum power output rating of 126 kW at 6 000 r/min, with an accompanying torque peak of 226 Nm at 4 400 r/min. Drive is to the front wheels only via a six-speed manual gearbox.

This model accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.0 sec and has a top speed of 193 km/h. Combined cycle fuel consumption comes to 9.6 litres/100 km, dropping to 7.6 litres/100 km in extra-urban driving. That allows a cruising range in excess of 800 km from the 65 litre fuel tank. The CO2 emissions rating is 230 g/km.

Like all the models in the Koleos range, the Dynamique 2.5 4x2 rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, shod with 225/60 R17 all-terrain tyres.

Next up in the range is the Koleos Dynamique 2.5 16V 4x4. The engine and gearbox are identical to the 4x2 version, but included here is Renault's innovative all-wheel drive system, known as All-Mode 4x4-i.

This intelligent four-wheel drive system is able to split torque between the front and rear axles by using a raft of sensors to determine loss of traction, and then seamlessly delivering urge to the rear axles as required. The front/rear torque split is variable up to a maximum of 50:50.

In default mode, the all-wheel drive system is set to 'Auto', which allows the electronic control unit to continuously monitor traction and driving conditions, and vary the torque/split accordingly.

On challenging surfaces, a 4WD Lock mode can be selected via a push-button on the centre console. This locks the front/rear torque split in the 50:50 setting. There is also a 2WD Lock mode, which prevents the system from feeding torque to the rear wheels.

The Koleos Dynamique 2.5 4x4 accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 9.3 sec and has a top speed of 194 km/h. The fuel consumption figure comes to 9.9 litres/100 km in the combined cycle, and 8.0 litres/100 km on the open road. The CO2 emissions rating is 237 g/km.

Both models feature Renault's luxurious and comprehensive Dynamique equipment package, with a long list of standard features.

Standard safety kit includes ABS brakes with Emergency Brake Assist, an electronically control parking brake with automatic park control, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters, and rear seat belts with load limiters.

The Dynamique package also includes front, front side and front/rear curtain airbags, anti-whiplash head restraints, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and a system that automatically unlocks the doors, cuts off the fuel system and activates the hazard warning lights in the case of an accident.

A comprehensive list of driver aids includes a seven-function trip computer, cruise control, variable-rate electric power steering, and a height and tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Halogen headlights and front fog lamps are standard, as is a comprehensive interior lighting package.

The driver's seat has a lumbar support adjuster and is height-adjustable, while the front passenger seat folds forward to form a table. The rear bench seat is split 60:40 and forms a flat cargo floor when folded down.

Standard convenience items include electrically operated windows front and rear, manual climate control, and a 140 watt CD sound system with satellite controls and six loudspeakers. Also included are 12V power sockets front and rear, retractable rear sun blinds, and front sun visors with vanity mirrors for driver and front passenger.

The Dynamique interior is fitted out in smart and durable charcoal cloth upholstery with a charcoal dashboard and aluminium-finish trim.

The third model in the new Renault Koleos range is the Dynamique Premium 2.5 16V 4x4 CVT. It links the same, advanced 2.5-litre fuel-injected petrol engine to an innovative Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT) and Renault's All-Mode-i four-wheel drive system.

The CVT unit provides the ideal effective gear ratio for all driving conditions, while offering all the clutchless convenience of a conventional automatic gearbox. A sequential manual mode can also be selected.

This model sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 9.3 sec and has a 194 km/h top speed – figures identical to that of the six-speed manual version. The fuel consumption and emissions ratings are also the same as the manual model.

However, it benefits from the extended features of the Dynamique Premium package. This includes everything provided by the Dynamique models, but adds ESP stability control, front and rear parking assistance sensors, and Hill Start Assistance and Hill Descent Control to the features list.

Also additional is a rain sensor that automatically activates the windscreen wipers, while the headlight activation is also automatic. In addition, the Easy Estate system contributes to the ease of use of Koleos, allowing the mechanical release of the rear seats to maximise boot space, simply by pulling a lever behind the tailgate

Inside, leather upholstery replaces the Dynamique's cloth interior, while the vanity mirrors are lit. Automatic climate control is standard. The Dynamique Premium model also gets satin-finish aluminium roof bars.

The final model in the Renault Koleos range is the Dynamique Premium 2.0 dCi 4x4 Manual. It's powered by an advanced, Euro 4-compliant common-rail 2,0-litre turbodiesel engine with particulate filter, rated at 127 kW at 3 750 r/min, and 360 Nm at 2 000 r/min.

A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, as is the Renault All-Mode-i all-wheel drive system.

The Koleos 2.0 dCi achieves a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 9.9 sec, while the top speed is 191 km/h. Combined-cycle fuel consumption comes to 7.9 litres/100 km, dipping to only 6.8 litres/100 km during open-road cruising. This should allow a cruising range of more than 900 km. The CO2 emissions rating is 209 g/km.

The two Dynamique Premium models also offer a comprehensive range of optional extras. These include an electric panoramic sunroof with the largest surface in its segment, Xenon headlights with headlight washers, and a Bose Premium Sound System.

Koleos is the first Renault model to benefit from the new partnership established with Bose, and the seven loudspeakers and subwoofer system places it at the top of the segment in terms of sonic performance.

The comprehensive range of factory-approved accessories available for the new Koleos range also includes a body kit and body accessories, roof bars, mudguards, child seats, GPS navigation systems, an iPod interface, Bluetooth mobile phone kits and on-board video.

As is the case with all Renaults, the new Koleos benefits from Renault SA’s prioritised commitment to customer service excellence under the Renault Confiance banner.

All Renault Koleos models are supplied with a standard three-year/100 000 km warranty and a five-year/60 000 km Maintenance plan. Also included is a 24-hour roadside assistance and security plan.

Renault's commitment to customer peace of mind embraces fixed price menus, prompt and efficient customer car, and competitive spare parts pricing.
