The European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP) has been smashing cars for more than 20 years to advance the cause of automotive safety in the European market, and in that time it has learned a great deal.
According to EuroNCAP’s statistics, the safest cars per category are as below:
Safest supermini
The ultimate in sensible small motoring, the Jazz may major on space, reliability and sophistication, but now you can add a brilliant passenger safety rating too – an average of 83%.
Safest Large family car
You might not have expected to see the Prius here due to its eco-warrior reputation, but while the Prius may be extraordinarily light on fuel and gentle on the environment, it is also a very safe car.
Safest compact executive car
Alfa might be another brand you would not expect to see at the top of the safety listings, especially in the highly competitive segment of the market which contains the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3-Series. However the new Giulia represents an enormous investment for Alfa Romeo, and now you can add a massively impressive 98% score for adult occupancy to the plaudits the car has already received for being so much fun to drive.
Safest executive car
Many consider the E-Class to be the ultimate expression of Mercedes-Benz’s ability to produce quick, safe and prestigious transport, but the latest version wears its incredibly effective safety technology lightly. They don’t come much better than this.
Safest small MPV
This family MPV is based on the Golf platform so it's a sophisticated and pleasant car to drive – just with added practicality and, it turns out, safety too.
Safest small SUV
The new Tiguan drew plaudits for its sharp looks (especially in R-Line threads), calming demeanour and bomb-proof cabin. But its elevation as the safest car in its class may entice yet more buyers to a Volkswagen dealership. It’s also worth mentioning that the new Toyota CH-R missed the top spot in this class by a single percentage point…

According to EuroNCAP’s statistics, Ford’s Ranger just pips the Toyota Hilux in the safety stakes, with an impressive 95% for adult passenger protection.
