A classic South African road-trip is often marked with a strategic travel plan and even more strategic pitstops. So, taking pictures often need to get squeezed in somewhere between a Wimpy brekkie or a bathroom break in Colesberg.

But with a few easy tricks of the phonetography trade, you can capture your entire journey on-the-go from comfort of your seat – so long as it’s not the driver’s seat.

We took the new Huawei P30 Pro for a Sunday afternoon drive along the R44 to see how you can capture some insta-worthy pictures from your car.

The route along Clarence Drive (R44) from Hermanus to Gordons Bay is one of South Africa’s most scenic coastal routes and is a well-recommended scenic route for drivers, bikers and cyclers alike.

Here are 5 tips to take great pictures from your car:

1. Don’t lose your grip

Getting your hands on the Huawei P30 Pro is one thing but keeping it in your hands is another. Make sure you don’t lose the grip on your phone when you’re riding in the wind and trying to capture the open road. To ensure your phone is steady, simply adjust your grip from photo 1 to photo 2. This way, your phone can rest steadily on your thumb while your other four fingers wrap around the phone for a solid, wind-proof grip.

2. Fast track with a time-lapse

A time-lapse is one of the best ways to capture a journey as it can compact a road trip of an hour into a one-minute video (just watch the space on your device). It does this by capturing still images with a certain time interval and then accelerating the speed afterwards.

3. Focus on a distant landscape that appears still

When you’re travelling in a car at 120 km/hour, your biggest challenge will be taking photos of nearby objects that simply whoosh past. Therefore, its best to focus on things like mountains or rolling hills that appear more still. The Huawei P30 Pro’s zoom functionality came in handy here. With its Leica quad camera that has 5x optical zoom, you can really focus on any objects or landscapes far and wide.

4. Capture a few wide-angle wonders

If there’s a moment in your road trip where the road is stretched out wide before you, take it all in with the Huawei P30 Pro’s wide-angle functionality. This feature is perfect for taking pictures from your windshield and will allow you to capture the magnitude of SA’s vast open landscapes.

5. Spare the glare and open a window

Finally, let your hair down and open a window. Not only to feel the wind in your hair but to get rid of that awful glare that often defines a picture taken from a car. Unless your windows are squeaky clean, you won’t get a great effect and opening a window will allow you to capture crisp and clear photos. Just remember tip #1 in this case – don’t lose your grip.
