7 ordinary words that mean something totally different to petrolheads

2017-04-13 06:01

We rarely think about the words that make up our daily vocabulary except when we hear people use them in a way that we are not familiar with.

When it comes to petrolheads, we have a dictionary which is almost perpendicular to that of ordinary humans. Something which might mean one thing for them means something totally different for us.

Here are a few ordinary words that mean something totally unique to those with petrol running though their veins. How many can you recognise?

1. Boost

To ordinary people:
verb/noun (1) help or encourage (something) to increase or improve; (2) a push from below.

To petrolheads: The pressure formed by a turbocharger which forces air into the engine of the car, thus creating a boost.

2. Stock

To ordinary people:
noun (1) the goods or merchandise kept on the premises of a shop or warehouse and available for sale or distribution; (2) the capital raised by a company or corporation through the issue and subscription of shares.

To petrolheads: Plain and stock-standard, nothing has been done to the car to alter it.

3. Flush

To ordinary people:
verb cleanse (something, especially a toilet) by causing large quantities of water to pass through it

To petrolheads: When the wheels of a car are modified to sit next to (flush) the fenders of the car. It also refers to body panels of a car which are smoothed out, such as door handles, and number plate panels in the rear section of the car.

4. Unicorn

To ordinary people:
noun: A mythical animal – a horse with a horn protruding from its forehead.

To petrolheads: A rare car that is almost legendary to most car lovers. It is pursued, idolised and almost never for sale.

5. Spinning

To ordinary people:
noun: An intense form of aerobic exercise performed on stationary exercise bikes and led by an instructor who sets the constantly varying pace.

To petrolheads: The act of losing traction – drivers wheelspin their car, intentionally or not. Spinning is also a growing form of motorsport in South Africa.

6. Money

To ordinary people:
noun: a current medium of exchange in the form of coins and banknotes.

To petrolheads: A medium that can be used to buy car parts.

7. Sleeper

To ordinary people:
noun: a person or animal who is asleep

To petrolheads: A vehicle that by design looks slow or simple (understated) but when driving is surprisingly fast. 'Sleeping' on the line refers to when a driver, racing against another driver, pulls away to slowly when the lights go green. That driver is then said to be "sleeping" on the line.
