It's no secret that our lives are jam-packed and many people perhaps can't find the time to relax among the hustle and bustle of life. What was once a subculture and has now become a multi-million rand industry is going off the beaten track in a vehicle.

Carmakers have spent millions in research and development to produce cars that can drive on country lanes, over small rocks (and sometimes big ones), through water and on sand.

In the United Kingdom, the term for driving on unpaved roads is 'green laning'. The video clip above has five off-road biased vehicles that perform better off the beaten path than on tarmac.

The list includes the robust Toyota Land Cruiser, the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Ford's performance-orientated bakkie the Ranger Raptor, the Ariel Nomad and lastly the SA-bound Land Rover Defender.

All of these vehicles put their power through all four wheels for better grip and traction because of the terrain owners might take them into, what's clear is that all of them are extremely capable and very few obstacles will halt their progress.
