• Xtreme new top model in Triton range

• R100 000 value package available at R40 000 premium

• Triton Xtreme available in limited numbers

Mitsubishi has lifted the lid on its new Triton Xtreme double cab bakkie. The new model carries accessories to the value of R100 000 over the previous top-of-the-range model, but the Japanese automaker is offering it to customers at a premium of R40 000!

Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, says: "For South African people, a bakkie such as the complete Triton range is more than simply a practical vehicle - for many it is a status symbol that makes them stand out. We are launching the Triton Xtreme for owners with an extreme lifestyle at only a small premium over the existing 4x4 Auto flagship.

"The new derivative is extreme on all levels, especially looks that show its owner follows an extreme lifestyle and is not shy about it. From the outside, the new Xtreme will be turning heads at a distance thanks to a host of visual improvements all over."

The Xtreme is powered by Mitsubishi's 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine that delivers 133kW and 430Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox.

Going Xtreme

Combined with the electronic off-road assistance coupled to the Super Select II 4WD system with the option of full-time all-wheel drive with high and low range and a centre diff-lock option, as well as selectable two-wheel drive, the Triton Xtreme will make child's play of the most extreme driving conditions.

The Xtreme gets a distinctive new black bumper and grill combo, as well as a bonnet protector and headlight covers. Other exterior additions include Xtreme branding, 4x4 stickers, door handle cups to protect the paint against nail scratches, roof rack supports, window visors, and taillight covers.

A bold-looking Kekosport style bar in black is mounted behind the cab. The Xtreme model also gets a Bosal tow bar.

Safety in check

The Triton Xtreme retains the full supplement of safety features as the rest of the Triton range.

This includes Electronic Off-Road Assistance that enhances the Super Select II 4WD system by employing Hill Descent Control, Automatic Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) that works with S-AWC to provide maximum safety and driver control, and Hill Start Assist (HAS).

The Xtreme also boasts a seven-airbag system, while Mitsubishi's advanced RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) Body Construction utilises crumple zones that route and absorb energy during high-impact collisions, according to the automaker.

Side Impact Protection Bars in the doors add to the vehicle's safety features, which include ISOFIX child seat anchors.
