• BMW's X5 M and X6 M are the latest high-performance SUVs launched locally.

• The most powerful SUV on the list has over 500kW.

• The second most powerful SUV on the list is a hybrid.

The recent addition of the BMW X5 M and X6 M to the market has seen a shake up in the list of the most powerful SUVs available locally. The Bavarian duo both produce 460kW from a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, that eclipses the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63S' 450kW.

The X5 M costs from R2 632 258 and the X6 M from R2 733 420. The duo boast an increase of 37kW over its predecessors and BMW M anoraks will notice the SUVs boast the same power outputs as the M5.

Another new super SUV launched recently is the Maserati Levante Trofeo. If you haven't heard of the Trofeo, it translates to trophy in English, and is the high-performance derivative of the Levante, Maserati's best-selling model in South Africa.

It features the most powerful engine in a Maserati yet; a 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 motor with 439kW and 730Nm. The Italian carmaker says its SUV can hit 100km/h from standstill in less than four seconds.

The list is headed by an American followed by a German and an Italian. We won't spoil it for you, so have a look at the ten most powerful SUVs available.

There are few first time carmakers with SUVs on the list, including Lamborghini, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. A sole British entry from Land Rover occupies the bottom position.

Isn't it wild to think that all the four-wheel drive machines with lofty ground clearances have over 400kW!? Let us know which of the top 10 you'd happily park in your driveway. Mail us here.
