The Nissan Patrol is a legend in the automotive world and has just received a significant overhaul.

The SUV now boasts with the best of what Nissan Intelligent Mobility has to offer, including enhanced luxury features, according to the automaker. Nissan says that while the Patrol takes on a fresher design, it retains the off-road capabilities and engine that made it such a hit.

In 2021, the Patrol will celebrate its 70th birthday, but this one is a pre-birthday from the carmaker to itself.

Inside and out

Kabelo Rabotho, Director of Marketing at Nissan South Africa, says: "Engineered with the latest intelligent mobility technologies, the new Patrol will give its drivers and passengers a luxurious drive. The legendary vehicle is one of Nissan's most cherished models with sophisticated technology as well as a long and proud heritage. We're confident the new model will provide drivers with unrivalled luxury."

What you'll quickly pick up on is that the Patrol has a fresh new design. At the front, Nissan's V-motion grille takes on a new form, and the boomerang-shaped LED headlights further enhance the SUV's angular front.

The Patrol rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the cabin retains the vast amount of space but adds a 13-speaker Bose premium sound system, a multi-screen DVD entertainment system, 8-inch rear-seat entertainment screen, independent wireless headphones, and remote-enabled passenger vehicle infotainment.

At the front, users can operate the 8-inch colour screen with the touch technology, as well as enter and start the vehicle without having to use the key. The leather seats have a diamond-stitch to it and additional padding for a more comfortable experience, says Nissan. The front seats feature climate control and lumbar support.

Engine and power

The Patrol continues with the naturally-aspirated 5.6-litre V8 engine that produces 298kW and 560Nm. Nissan's Intelligent 4x4 system allows the bulky SUV to take on any terrain. And, says Nissan, it transfers driver between the wheels and axles seamlessly.

Nissan says it also improved the suspension, as well as reduced the vibrations.

The new Nissan Patrol retails for R1 515 700.
