We know its launch is imminent, and we've also estimated pricing of Ford's new Ranger Thunder bakkie. Now, we've seen it in the metal!

Weekend drives are the new normal in our home; get in the car and see where the road takes us. This past weekend I needed to head out to Paarl, about 60km out of Cape Town, for a collection and decided to take a drive around town in search for some antique stores.

We didn't find any open vintage spots while just cruising down the Main Road, and suddenly my eyes fall on this bakkie in the Ford dealership windows. It's the automaker's new Ranger Thunder bakkie which will be launched virtually later this week.

Splashed in brilliant white paint and riding on big blacked-out alloy wheels, the Thunder's front end sets it apart from the usual Ranger with red inserts in the black grille. It also has red Thunder lettering on the front doors and on the tailgate, framed in black. There's red stitching on the interior and darker head- and tail lights to distinguish this limited edition model from its Wildtrak sibling.

The images are not the best through the dealership windows, but it provides a pretty good idea what the new bakkie looks like compared to the rest of the line-up. We'll have more details later this week after the vehicle is launched on Thursday (13 August).

Earlier in July, Wheels24's Charlen Raymond revealed estimated pricing and reported the new Ranger Thunder would also be built locally at the Silverstone plant in Pretoria.

According to an unnamed source, Raymond says the range of single- and bi-turbo 2.0-litre diesel engines will power the Thunder.

The single turbo double cab XLT model (132kW/420Nm) will form the base for the Thunder, as well as the bi-turbo WildTrak (157kW/500Nm). Both engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic gearbox, with the former available only in rear-wheel-drive. The WildTrak is available in either 4x2 or 4x4.
